French charcuterie sector faces a 30% loss in revenues
French charcuterie sector is feeling the burden transmitted in the global pork market by the ASF situation in China. Pork prices In France have increased by 24% since March and for some ingredients, used in the industry, the hike was of 30%. Still, charcutiers cannot transfer those into the prices of their products, as mentioned by the French Federation des Industriels Charcutiers, Traiteurs (FICT).
France is competing against the Netherlands for the third position in the European top of charcutiers, behind Spain and France, informs Reuters. In France, the deals between suppliers and retailers are negotiated once a year, in February, and the buyers can refuse any increase in the prices if that is not enclosed in the contract.
According to Bernard Vallat, FICT President, the industry is hurt by this situation and every business is trying to renegotiate the prices with its clients. "If we don't rebalance with the buyers no business in this sector will survive", declared Vallant.
30% of the France charcutiers were losing money since 2017 due to a hike in commodity prices, he added. Pork prices in Europe have increased by 21.9% since last year and the trend has accelerated since March, as China started importing more pork to cover a gap of 10 million tonnes expected to appear in this market.
