Germany: Meat production down 8.1 percent in 2022

Meat production in Germany fell sharply in 2022. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that commercial slaughterhouses produced 7.0 million tonnes of meat in 2022, according to provisional results. This was a decline of 8.1% or 0.6 million tonnes compared with the previous year. Domestic meat production thus decreased each year since record year 2016 (8.3 million tonnes), though never as much as in 2022. A total of 51.2 million pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and horses as well as 701.4 million chickens, turkeys and ducks were slaughtered in the slaughterhouses in 2022.

Germany: Meat production down 8.1 percent in 2022

Pork: slaughter quantity decreased by 9.8%

With 47.0 million animals slaughtered in 2022, the number of pigs slaughtered fell by 9.2% or 4.8 million compared to the previous year. The number of slaughtered pigs of domestic origin fell by 9.6% to almost 45.8 million animals. After the significant decline in 2021, the number of imported pigs slaughtered on German farms rose by 6.5% to a good 1.2 million animals in 2022.

In total, the slaughterhouses produced around 4.5 million tons of pork in 2022. That was 9.8% or 485,000 tons less than in 2021. Compared to 2016, around 1.1 million tons less pork was produced in 2022, which corresponds to a decrease of almost a fifth (-19.7%). One reason for the declining pork production is the declining pig population in Germany.

Beef: slaughter volume decreased by 8.2%

The number of cattle slaughtered commercially in 2022 fell by 7.8% compared to 2021 to almost 3.0 million animals. This was mainly due to the decline in the number of cows slaughtered by 10.1% to 1.0 million animals and the number of bulls slaughtered by 6.6% to 1.1 million animals. The total slaughter volume of 985,000 tons of beef was 8.2% below the previous year's result.

Poultry meat: slaughter volume decreased by 2.9%

The amount of poultry meat produced in 2022 fell by 2.9% compared to 2021 to just over 1.5 million tons. The main reason for the decline is the 8.0% drop in production of turkey meat (turkey meat) to 0.4 million tons. In contrast, the production of young broiler chicken meat fell by only 0.6% to 1.1 million tons.
