Germany: Meat production down 8.1 percent in 2022
Pork: slaughter quantity decreased by 9.8%
With 47.0 million animals slaughtered in 2022, the number of pigs slaughtered fell by 9.2% or 4.8 million compared to the previous year. The number of slaughtered pigs of domestic origin fell by 9.6% to almost 45.8 million animals. After the significant decline in 2021, the number of imported pigs slaughtered on German farms rose by 6.5% to a good 1.2 million animals in 2022.
In total, the slaughterhouses produced around 4.5 million tons of pork in 2022. That was 9.8% or 485,000 tons less than in 2021. Compared to 2016, around 1.1 million tons less pork was produced in 2022, which corresponds to a decrease of almost a fifth (-19.7%). One reason for the declining pork production is the declining pig population in Germany.
Beef: slaughter volume decreased by 8.2%
The number of cattle slaughtered commercially in 2022 fell by 7.8% compared to 2021 to almost 3.0 million animals. This was mainly due to the decline in the number of cows slaughtered by 10.1% to 1.0 million animals and the number of bulls slaughtered by 6.6% to 1.1 million animals. The total slaughter volume of 985,000 tons of beef was 8.2% below the previous year's result.
Poultry meat: slaughter volume decreased by 2.9%
The amount of poultry meat produced in 2022 fell by 2.9% compared to 2021 to just over 1.5 million tons. The main reason for the decline is the 8.0% drop in production of turkey meat (turkey meat) to 0.4 million tons. In contrast, the production of young broiler chicken meat fell by only 0.6% to 1.1 million tons.
