Germany can once again export fresh beef to Japan
The Japanese market is particularly important for German exporters due to the demand for high-priced beef offal. The reopening of the Japanese market also has positive effects for the German dairy industry: With Germany's recognition as FMD-free, the export of untreated dairy products, such as raw milk cheese, is now permitted again.
Federal Minister for Agriculture, Food and Home Affairs Alois Rainer stated : "Exports are crucial for the German agricultural and food industry. Therefore, we are making every effort to remove existing obstacles and hurdles. I am pleased that we have succeeded in doing so in the case of Japan. We also intend to dismantle other remaining export restrictions resulting from foot-and-mouth disease as soon as possible. Furthermore, we are supporting our economy with a modern agricultural export strategy".
The opening of the Japanese market was preceded by a comprehensive exchange of veterinary expertise between the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Home Affairs (BMLEH) and the Japanese MAFF. A delegation led by the State Secretary also visited the site a few weeks ago. Prof. Dr. Dr.Markus Schick held talks during a working visit to Japan. Before the ban imposed in January 2025 due to foot-and-mouth disease, the Japanese beef market had only reopened a year earlier after a more than 20-year ban due to BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy). Just a few days earlier, the important export market of South Korea had reopened after intensive negotiations with the BMLEH German imports of pork and pork products have been permitted again.
On January 10, 2025, the first case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Germany in over 35 years was detected in water buffalo in the Märkisch-Oderland district of Brandenburg. No further cases were reported in Germany. As confirmation of the rapid and successful containment and the control and monitoring measures implemented by the federal and state governments, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) reinstated the "FMD-free without vaccination" status for all of Germany on April 14, 2025. Subsequently, various countries gradually lifted their import restrictions.
