Germany exports more pork to third countries
In January 2026, Germany increased its pork exports compared to the same month of the previous year. A total of approximately 187,000 tons of pork were exported, about 5% more than the 178,000 tons exported in January 2025. This brought the export volume back to the level of approximately 185,000 tons recorded in January 2024.
Exports to third countries expanded
The development was twofold: While exports to other EU countries, at around 155,000 tons in January of this year, were slightly below the previous year's level, exports to third countries increased significantly during the same period. At approximately 32,000 tons, these were around 60% higher than the previous year's figure of 20,000 tons, thus reaching a considerably higher level again. The outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in eastern Germany in January 2025 had initially severely restricted the possibilities for exporting pork to third countries. After the corresponding trade restrictions were gradually lifted, trade in third-country markets could be expanded significantly again.
The EU remains the most important sales market
Despite the dynamic growth in trade with third countries, the vast majority of exports still go to the European Union's single market. Deliveries to EU member states remain clearly dominant, accounting for approximately 83%. Intra-European trade flows thus remain at a high level, even though a slight slowdown has been observed recently.
More pork exported to Italy and the Netherlands
A look at the main destination countries shows that Italy, with around 32,000 tons, and the Netherlands, with 28,000 tons, are among the most significant buyers of German pork. Both countries increased their imports from Germany compared to the previous year. They are followed by Poland with 14,000 tons, and Austria and Belgium, each with approximately 10,000 tons.
