Germany seeks a new strategy for the swine industry

Germany needs a new strategy for the swine sector, as the current situation is threatening farmers and processors, said the German Minister of Agriculture, Julia Klockner after a meeting with representatives of the industry. Currently, live pig prices are at €1.27 per kilo, below the levels reported last year (€1.47 ). At this level, pig farmers in the country can't hope for much profit, as the entire German pig market is depressed due to an oversupply of 260,000 tonnes of pork appeared in the first 8 months of the year.
Demand has constantly dropped for the last couple of years, which makes it difficult for processors and retailers as well. "The economic situation on the farms is dramatic", concluded Minister Klockner while announcing the need for a new strategy that can revive the German swine industry. However, Julia Klockner refused the idea of incentives accorded to farmers exiting the sector. In her opinion, lost production could be replaced by imports so there is no need for additional payments.
Germany has lost access to the main Asian markets in September 2020, when the first case of African swine fever (ASF) was reported in the country.
