Hong Kong suspended poultry imports from USA, France and Mexico

The import suspension was ordered in view of notifications from the World Organization for Animal Health about an outbreak of low pathogenic H7N1 avian influenza in different areas of these countries.

Hong Kong suspended poultry imports from USA, France and Mexico

The food safety authority of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region announced today (13th of March) that poultry meat imports and eggs from areas of the United States, Mexico and France are suspended.
The announcement was preceded by notifications from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) about an outbreak of low pathogenic H7N1 avian influenza in Hopkins County, Texas, in the United States (US), an outbreak of low pathogenic H5N3 avian influenza in Finistère Department in France, and outbreaks of highly pathogenic H7N3 avian influenza in Guanajuato State and Queretaro State of Mexico, informs Xinhua agency.

Poultry meat and eggs imports from the farms located in those areas and nearby has been susppended and "the Center for Food Safety has contacted the U.S., French and Mexican authorities over the issues and will closely monitor information issued by the OIE on avian influenza outbreaks. Appropriate actions will be taken in response to the development of the situation", as a spokesman of Hong Kong's CFS mentioned.

Last year, Hong Kong imported about 290,000 tons of chilled and frozen poultry meat and 580 million poultry eggs from the United States; 14,000 tons of chilled and frozen poultry meat and 7.6 million poultry eggs from France and 100 tons of frozen poultry from Mexico.
