IAWS: Guarantee of Traceability

The Spanish white pork sector, through the improvement of animal welfare, has made numerous advances in the field of biosecurity, health, animal handling and feeding; inter alia. All these values are defended and pursued by the “Welfare Commitment Certified” seal and ultimately translate into guaranteeing and certifying to consumers a complete “From Farm to Fork” traceability in the products they consume.
The Technical Regulation INTERPORC ANIMAL WELFARE SPAIN (IAWS) is based on the 5 freedoms established by the OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) and on the 12 General Criteria for animal Welfare, also taking into account the EU regulations. It is evaluated and validated by a Scientific Committee of experts in animal welfare, and its transparency has been endorsed by organizations for the protection and defense of animals.
In order to obtain the certification, independent certification bodies are in charge of auditing and verifying farms, slaughterhouses and industries, so the rigor and objectivity of the certification is always met. Furthermore, only after having fulfilled all the requirements demanded by the IAWS Technical Regulation and in all the phases of the chain, the operators can use their products with the seal. This entails an exercise of transparency and real traceability that the seal certifies to consumers
In order to inform to consumers of its origin, each product has a NOAC code (Number of Certified Authorized Operator), unique and non-transferable for each certified operator, which consists of: the acronym IAWS; the type of operator (G for farms, S for slaughterhouses and I for industry); the Operator number (a 3-digit serial); and the type of production system of the operator (1, 2 or 3).
All in all, the IAWS certification seeks that consumers are participants in the work carried out by the pork sector, offering them clear and rigorous information about all the efforts that it dedicates in the production of the food that reaches their tables, and that allows them to recognize that a product has been produced with the maximum guarantees by having detailed information on each of the processes and on each of the steps in the value chain.
