Italian pig meat production down by 12%
Italian pig meat production has fallen by 5% in October, compared to the same month a year ago but the real picture looks more dramatic for the sector: a 12% drop in the year to October 19, to 1,200 thousand tonnes, according to data released by Istat.
However, in the first nine months of 2019, exports have increased by 3% to 200,000 tonnes last year due to weaker domestic demand, according to AHDB analysts. The main markets for Italian pork were Germany and France.
"Live pig imports are down 13%, to 883,000 head. 15% more were imported from the Netherlands in the year to September but imports from Denmark, Germany, Spain and France were all lower. This could reflect the contraction in pig herd in some EU countries and also higher export demand. The domestic pig herd in Italy fell 1% between 2017 and 2018 to 8.5million head.
Pig meat imports were 4.5% lower in the year to September, with the reductions from Germany, France, Denmark and Poland. Lower imports and production, together with higher exports, point to weaker domestic demand," commented Jannie Tanner, AHDB analyst.
