Italy's love affair with the hamburger is reaching unprecedented heights
According to the latest figures from food delivery giant Deliveroo, the number of specialized burger joints active on the platform in Italy skyrocketed by approximately 50% in just two years (between December 2023 and December 2025), with the highest concentration of new openings recorded in Florence, Turin, and Genoa.
The Italian blueprint: Premium ingredients and smash tech
Today’s Italian consumers are increasingly demanding a premium experience, driving restaurateurs to combine sophisticated local ingredients with innovative culinary pairings. When it comes to specific recipes, simplicity and execution reign supreme.
According to Deliveroo’s 2025 consumer data, the top-ordered burgers in Italy are:
While alternative proteins like fried chicken and pulled pork are gaining traction further down the list, vegetarian and fish-based burgers remain niche options for now. Furthermore, an Italian burger order is never complete without classic American sides; french fries remain the ultimate companion, closely followed by onion rings, chicken nuggets, and chicken wings.
The platform also registered some jaw-dropping, high-value "record orders" throughout 2025. Deliveroo fulfilled two separate deliveries worth approximately €600 each. The first was dispatched directly to a luxury yacht, containing a massive order of 35 burgers, fries, and drinks. The second high-value delivery supplied a corporate office meal at a major consulting firm, consisting of 25 premium sandwiches alongside an assortment of sides.
Hyper-growth in mid-sized cities
While major metropolises maintain steady volumes, independent burger joints in mid-sized Italian cities experienced explosive order growth in 2025 compared to 2024 (excluding major international fast-food chains):
In Trieste, the local specialty hotspot Sartoria Burger Club has emerged as a prime example of this digital-driven success.
"The burger culture has now spread from North to South; more than just a dish, it has become an evening ritual," explained Luca, representative of Sartoria Burger Club. "Thanks to delivery, we are able to expand our reach, growing our order volume and our entire business. In the last month alone, our orders on Deliveroo have almost doubled compared to our previous monthly average. A burger must be deeply satisfying and never boring. That is why it is vital for us to maintain an active, engaging dialogue with our customers, both in-store and through digital channels."
A lucrative gateway for local restaurateurs
The synergy between premium physical storefronts and digital delivery networks has reshaped Italy's food beverage sector, proving that American-style casual dining can thrive alongside traditional Italian cuisine.
"Hamburgers and American cuisine were the single most ordered food categories on Deliveroo in 2025," stated Andrea Zocchi, Managing Director of Deliveroo Italy. "Despite being a core symbol of food delivery for years, Italians' appreciation for this type of cuisine is constantly growing. This represents a massive opportunity for local restaurateurs who want to merge their in-store dining experience with delivery to successfully unlock new revenue streams."
