JBS invests R$400 million to expand salmon production in Australia
The expansion of the Whale Point facility will allow Huon to continue to grow fish for longer in land-based tanks. This will allow larger fish to be sent out to sea, spending less time in the marine environment. Huon has led the way in the use of such facilities in Tasmania, with the opening of its first nursery at Whale Point in 2019.
"The project reinforces Huon’s innovative and pioneering profile. The salmon will spend most of their production cycle on land thanks to the strengthening of our installed capacity. The investment also increases the unit’s water reuse rate, which now reaches 99%. The remaining percentage is used in other stages of production: the waste is treated and applied as fertilizer in cherry production by local farmers",explains Henrique Batista, CEO of Huon. In total, 150 jobs will be created during the construction of the space. Huon currently employs more than 1,000 people in Australia.
The circular economy is a priority for the company. Processing waste is turned into animal feed, pet treats and composted, becoming the basis for fertilizers. Huon's operations are distinguished by the monitoring of activities at its production sites.
