Japan and Uruguay open the path for two-way beef exports

A deal regarding bilateral exports of beef has been reached between Japan and Uruguay, after the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Montevideo last week, reports Japan Times newspaper.
Japan had been negotiating beef exports to Uruguay since March 2016, while imports of beef from Uruguay had been suspended by Tokyo since 2000 due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
In the last few months, Japan has started a promoting campaign for its Wagyu beef in South American countries. On the other side, Uruguay is the seventh largest beef exporter worldwide, with shipments accounting for 65% of total beef production. Uruguayan beef exports increased 4% in 2017 to 303,981 tonnes shipped weight – and registered the highest volume since 2006. Beef shipments were highly concentrated in China (accounting for more than 50% of total exports), the EU, the US, and Israel.
