Japan began a key assessment for Argentine's biggest goal with beef

From Japan, a market that Argentine has been eager to conquer to sell beef, came news that gives hope: the Animal Health Subcommittee of the Council for Food, Agriculture and Rural Policy, which depends on the agricultural portfolio of that country, began the evaluation of the "risks related to the importation of fresh beef from the northern region of Argentine (foot-and-mouth disease vaccination area)".

This, which is listed in the Japanese public body, was discussed and, although in the government of Javier Milei there is caution waiting to see how things unfold, for experts it is a sign that the Asian country reactivated a process that had been pending continuity since 2019. There is still much more to do, but it is a step in the direction of the objective of achieving exportability from all over the country.

In fact, Argentine already sells beef to Japan from Patagonia, which is a region free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination. But it cannot offer beef from the north of the region, that is, the rest of the country, because it is free of the disease but with vaccination.

In Patagonia, there is only one meat processing plant authorized to export beef to that market, but the possibilities, if it were opened to the rest of the country, are endless. For example, Japan is the third largest importing market for beef in the world, after China and the United States. In 2023, it imported 702,000 tons. Its largest suppliers were the United States and Australia, which provided 48%.

From the region, Uruguay is making a foothold in Japan. In 2023, it sold 7,900 tons of bone-in beef, a figure much higher than the 28 tons that Argentine Patagonia sold for US$228,000. It is a market with good commercial value. It pays well for the cuts. In 2023, it paid for Argentine products from US$4,249 per ton for the cuts to US$15,169 per ton for the loin. There were also interesting values such as US$14,970 for the wide steak.
