Lidl Belgium focuses on sustainable pork
“We are the first Belgian retailer that sells more sustainable pork," said Jeroen Bal, purchasing and marketing director for Lidl Belgium.
"All our pork has been certified with the "1 star Better Life" mark. We are the first Belgian discounter to sell only more sustainable pork. This makes us an important step towards our goal. Between now and 2020, we want to see annual growth of 10% in sales of sustainable products," added Mr. Bal.
Lidl received from Eurogroup for Animals, which includes GAIA, among others, the award for Europe's most pet-friendly supermarket. Thus Lidl already sells only park rabbit and all cage eggs were banned from the assortment.
Working according to the 'Better Life' programme also demands the efforts of the livestock farmers. Lidl provides a fixed fee that is not subject to fluctuating market prices for the strict requirements. The pig is thus given more price security.
Lidl Belgium is a supermarket chain with 300 branches in Belgium and Luxembourg, which has more than 7000 employees.
