Marel acquires Sleegers Technique

Marel completed this month the acquisition of Sleegers Technique, a Dutch provider of interleaving, stacking, loading, and slicing solutions for food processors globally. The joint offering by the two companies will strengthen Marel’s position in the case-ready and prepared foods segments. The transaction has been successfully completed. The innovative approach and customer focus of Sleegers Technique resonates well with Marel’s commitment to innovation and its vision to transform the way food is processed in partnership with customers. Sleegers Technique was founded in 1993 by entrepreneur Huub Sleegers and has grown into a company of 27 employees (FTEs) and revenues of around EUR 5 million. The company has a new experience center where customer demonstrations and full production line testing takes place.
Sleegers Technique is known for high quality offering in interleaving, loading, stacking, and slicing solutions. The solutions provided by Sleegers Technique for applications in hamburger, bacon and cheese processing are well known in the food service and retail markets. Sleegers is also experiencing growing interest from processors of alternative protein products, poultry and fish. Recently, Sleegers Technique introduced an innovative slicing technology to the market that offers product repositioning capabilities, that has received very positive feedback from customers.

Sleegers Technique enjoys a global customer base with particularly strong presence in Europe and North America. Together, Marel and Sleegers Technique are in a better position to provide solutions and services for customers in the case-ready and prepared food segments around the world.

The two companies will build on Sleegers Technique’s technical expertise and market knowledge in the case-ready and prepared foods, while leveraging Marel’s digital platforms and global reach in sales and aftermarket services for future growth. The added value of proximity of Sleegers Technique’s facilities in Nieuwkuijk, and Marel’s site in Boxmeer in the Netherlands will enable the companies to work closely and efficiently together.

Arni Sigurdsson, Chief Strategy Officer and EVP of strategic business units at Marel stated:
“With the acquisition of Sleegers Technique we continue to expand our capabilities in the case-ready and prepared foods segments. Sleegers state-of-the-art interleaving, loading, stacking, and slicing solutions are a great addition to our broad product offering for our expanding customer base worldwide who are increasingly looking to consumer-ready products. Through Marel’s strong global reach we can provide Sleegers Technique access to markets which have previously been difficult for them to reach, and our digital platform can accelerate Sleegers Technique digital journey. This is truly a win-win deal.”

Huub Sleegers, Founder and CEO of Sleegers Technique stated:
“I am truly proud of what the Sleegers Technique team has built up over the past 30 years, and I’m confident that becoming part of Marel is the right choice in terms of strategic and cultural fit. With our complementary solutions in the interleaving, loading, stacking and slicing domains and Marel’s global network in sales and service, there is great potential for further growth. This, in combination with the access to Marel’s global innovation capabilities and digital platform means that the sky is the limit for Marel and Sleegers Technique.”
