Mercolleida: Swine prices in Spain 2025
This is the third highest average price on record, after 2023 and 2024 (without adjusting for inflation, which has been a very significant factor since 2023). Following atypical years such as 2020 (COVID-19), 2021 (COVID-19, African swine fever in Germany, and a drop in Chinese imports), and 2022 (the war in Ukraine and increased costs), and a 2024 that saw a return to its "typical" price curve (rising in spring, rebounding and stabilizing in summer, falling in autumn, and returning to stability at the start of winter), 2025 has been marked, first, by the loss of export competitiveness caused by the comparatively high level of Spanish prices in the first half of the year, and then by the imposition of anti-dumping tariffs by China on all EU pork. This already complicated year has been further complicated by the outbreak of African swine fever in Spain in December, which has caused prices to plummet. The price of pork has fluctuated dramatically in just a couple of weeks. In the 52 weeks of 2025, prices rose in 15 weeks and fell in 24, remaining unchanged in the other 13. Prices climbed until the beginning of July (with a drop in January due to foot-and-mouth disease in Germany) and, since then, have declined for five consecutive months due to China, the increase in the European pig population, and finally, African swine fever (ASF). The year 2026 will begin with prices 52.5 cents (-33.5%) lower than at the start of 2025.
The base price for sows closed 2025 with an average of €0.705/kg live weight, which is 17.2% and €0.146 lower than in 2024. There were 8 weeks of increases, 13 weeks of decreases, and 31 weeks of no change. The year 2026 will begin with a price 28 cents (-41.2%) lower than at the start of 2025.
The base price for piglets closed 2025 with an average of €51.98 per head, which is 21.4% and €14.12 lower than in 2024. There were 12 weeks of increases, 21 weeks of decreases, and 19 weeks of no change. 2026 will begin with a price 58.3% and €33.50 lower than at the start of 2025.
