Mexico: Keeping Sinaloa, an avian influenza free zone
With the aim of keeping Sinaloa an avian influenza (AI)-free zone and advancing in the control and eradication of bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the state government agreed to strengthen animal health actions, mainly in the area of traceability.
The chief director of the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), Javier Trujillo Arriaga, in a meeting with the Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock of Sinaloa, Jaime Montes Salas, explained that the outbreak of highly pathogenic AI H7N3 in the region is under control and does not represent a risk for the poultry sector in Sinaloa.
He stressed that technicians from the Mexico-United States Commission for the Prevention of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Other Exotic Animal Diseases of the Senasica carried out actions with which they protected more than 35 million birds in the affected region, a large part of them of high genetic value.
He commented that surveillance, cleaning, disinfection and sanitary work continues on the farms that were affected, to allow their repopulation.
Trujillo Arriaga pointed out that, in the same way, the General Directorate of Phytozoosanitary Inspection continues with the work of controlling the mobilization of poultry products and by-products from the affected areas, to avoid risks to free regions, such as the northwest of the country.
The poultry industry in Sinaloa, he said, has played an exemplary role in the sector, since it is the only entity that has authorization from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to export poultry products to that country.
He stressed that it is essential that state governments and producers actively participate in the work plan operated by the General Directorate of Animal Health to control and eradicate AI in the center-west of the country, since it is the only way to achieve common objectives.
