The Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Julio Berdegué Sacristán, is convinced that sustainability and animal welfare are the path to achieving a more resilient, productive, and competitive Mexican pork industry at the national and international levels. He expressed this during the commemoration of National Pork Day, celebrated on March 15, and acknowledged the increase in consumption of this animal protein, thanks to the reduction in poverty with the arrival of the Fourth Transformation.

Mexico seeks to reduce pork imports and strengthen its production

Mexico imports 47 percent of its total pork consumption; "I'm sure that if we do things right and work together, we can produce more and generate the 1.4 million tons we need to achieve full self-sufficiency in this meat sector", explained Julio Berdegué.

The work of the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety, and Quality (Senasica) is a vital component of the agrifood system and national agricultural policy; hence the importance of strengthening its capabilities and taking advantage of its opportunities to address threats like African Swine Fever in sectors such as pig farming, the federal secretary explained.

The Mexican government is open to frank and constructive dialogue: "You are the ones who know the problems and opportunities of pig farming, and we would miss a valuable opportunity if we design public policies without dialogue".

On the other hand, the head of Agriculture recognized this union's support for the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. "The President has a tremendous asset, which is the support she is receiving from the Mexican people as a whole. They are a united people, a people who are always open to collaboration and coordination with other countries, always putting the defense of our national sovereignty first".

He insisted that the Mexican government maintains the vision of an integrated North America, especially in its agri-food systems. "Over several decades, Canada, the United States, and Mexico have been able to build what is undoubtedly the region on the planet with the greatest food security (and) we are also contributing significantly to global food security."

Secretary Berdegué Sacristán called on the pork sector to decisively address the environmental problems affecting it. "Sustainable pork farming will also mean more efficient and productive pork farming".

A few days ago, he held a virtual meeting with his counterparts from the United States and Canada, Brooke Rollins and Lawrence MacAulay, respectively, and both expressed their willingness and commitment to continue working on animal and plant health, marketing, and scientific and technological cooperation.

For his part, the president of the Board of Directors of the National Confederation of Livestock Organizations, Homero García de la Llata, noted that the commemoration of National Pork Day is an opportunity to recognize Mexican pig farmers for their efforts. "They make us feel very proud of this species, the pig; it is essential to the nutrition of all Mexican families".

The president of the Mexican Pork Producers Organization (OPORMEX), Heriberto Hernández Cárdenas, expressed his support for the Mexican government in the face of the United States' tariff policies and applauded the strengthening of measures to advance food sovereignty. "The Mexican pork industry is prepared and united, with conviction, to team up with the President and, hand in hand with you (Secretary Julio Berdegué), to develop the necessary strategies to reverse our dependence on foreign products".

Finally, the executive president of Opormex, Iván Espinosa, added that the national pig industry has evolved significantly in recent decades, positioning itself as a modern, efficient and constantly growing industry thanks to the commitment, innovation and vision of the producers, technicians and businesspeople who make up this association. He therefore proposed structuring the organization's work around eight key pillars and moving towards a stronger, more sustainable and competitive activity.
