NI sends its first batch of beef to the Philippines in 22 years
The shipment amounted to 24 tonnes of beef which recently reached the capital Manila. As reported by BBC, the beef will be used in the catering sector.
The estimated beef trade in the next five years between Northern Ireland and the Philippines is estimated to reach 5 million pounds.
In 1996, the Philippine authorities imposed a ban on beef from the United Kingdom after an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The lifting of the ban was announced back in 2017.
Farmers Journal reports that prior to beef, pork chicken and lamb had already been cleared for export to this country.
“We have been working in partnership with Defra and industry to identify new markets and opportunities for our local meat sector. This process began in 2015 and it is welcoming to note that the Filipino people will now have the opportunity to sample the fine quality beef produced by our farmers,” the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) deputy chief veterinary officer Dr Perpetua McNamee said.
