Oustanding figures for Uruguayan beef exports
Beef exports from Uruguay have increased rapidly last year, as the South American country has filled the gap left by Argentina in some external markets. Uruguayan beef exports have grown constantly in the second half of the year and have reached 45,000 tonnes in December, a record figure for the country's beef industry.
During the second half of the year, Argentine beef exports have dropped by 16.5% due to a ban on exports placed to keep domestic prices under control. At the same time, Uruguay has replaced Argentina as the second-largest supplier of South American beef in the Chinese market. According to the economist Juan Manuel Garzon of the Institute of Studies on the Argentine and Latin American Reality (IERAL) of the Mediterranean Foundation, most of the main players in the global beef market have expanded their presence in the Chinese market: Brazil by 41.6%, followed by Uruguay (22.9%) and the United States (6.2%).
In just one year (2020-2021), Argentina's share in the Chinese beef market has declined from 23% to 11%, becoming the third-largest supplier of South American beef behind Uruguay and Brazil.
