Pakistani poultry industry looks to gain access in the Afghan market

Pakistani poultry breeders are looking to increase their market share in the Afghan market as the COVID-19 outbreak in Iran has hindered the chicken meat and eggs exports to Afghanistan. Pakistan Poultry Association has requested the federal government to include Chicken meat and eggs in the list of export items to Afghanistan,” Chaudhary Muhammad Fargham, vice chairman PPA, said in a statement.
Currently, Afghanistan is importing 30% of the chicken meat and eggs to meet domestic consumption. Pakistani poultry industry has an annual turnover of PKR 800 billion ($4.8 billion), while the investment stands at PKR 700 billion ($4.2 billion). The rate growth for the Pakistani poultry industry has been between 8% to 10% in the last 5 years and the country ranks as the world's 11th largest poultry production, with an annual output of 1,1 billion broilers. Recently, Pakistan gained access to several major markets in the Middle East region and wants to increase its poultry exports to consolidate its position as an important supplier for the neighboring countries. At the same time, in the domestic market poultry is seen as a force that keeps in balance prices for mutton and beef.
