Poland reports record poultry exports in 2017

The Polish Ministry of Finance announced that last year, the country exported 1.12 million tonnes of unprocessed meat and poultry offal, worth 8.3 billion PLN (1.97 billion euros). Compared to 2016, the figures represent an increase of 9.4 and 7.1%, respectively.
The sector is representative to the Polish meat industry, as the country gets to export 40% of the poultry production. The main importers for Polish poultry were Germany, Great Britain and France, the three countries accounting for at least 30% of the volumes exported last year.
Nevertheless, the record is worth being mentioned as Poland was subject to trade restriction on poultry until July 2017 due to a bird flu outbreak, as recalls Magdalena Kowalewska, an expert on agricultural markets for BG? BNP Paribas, quoted by Portal Spozywczy.
"It was only in July 2017 that Poland regained the status of a country free from the disease, which allowed domestic exporters to return to many previously closed markets. However, until the beginning of 2018, not all of them were fully recovered, for example, South Africa", observed Kowalewska.
If Poland is to get through this year without any cases of avian influenza, 2018 could establish a new record on poultry exports as the production is expected to rise. "Despite the occurrence of single outbreaks and cases of avian influenza in Europe, including in Italy, Germany, Great Britain or the Netherlands, as of February 2018, no disease was found in Poland. However, it can not be ruled out that it will return during the spring or autumn migrations of wild birds. If this pessimistic scenario does not come true, we can expect that in 2018 another record will be recorded in the export of poultry meat and offal", predicted the BGZ BNP Paribas expert.
