Pork and meat products in obesity prevention

The main complication of obesity is that it is associated with multiple pathologies such as hypertension or type 2 diabetes, which must be controlled with the help of a varied and healthy diet, regular physical activity and, if necessary, pharmacological treatment.

Pork is low in fat in its lean cuts and can be cooked healthily without the need for extra fat, such as baking, steaming or grilling, making it a suitable food for treating and preventing obesity and overweight. For example, a pork loin fillet (125 g) provides 130 kcal, while an individual portion of salmon (150 g) provides more than double that, 273 kcal.

On the other hand, the daily diet must ensure that the intake of vitamins and minerals is adequate, which does not occur in some restrictive diets; however, pork helps to cover these needs.

Low-fat diets are those with a lower energy density and usually contain more fibre, therefore, they can help increase satiety. These diets can be a suitable option when it is necessary to reduce the patient's cholesterol levels. Lean cuts of pork and lean meat products such as serrano ham, cured pork loin or cooked ham are suitable for inclusion in this type of diet due to their low lipid content.

In short, pork, due to its nutritional composition, ensures a correct protein replacement with a caloric value similar to that of other white meats. It is a suitable food for weight loss diets and obesity control due to its low fat content in its lean cuts, its high protein content and its adequate content of vitamins and minerals.
