Pork businesses in Ireland are profitable but they are depending on Brexit

The Irish pig production is dominated by family farms with an average number of 600 sows on each farm. That leads to a total number of registered sows of 165,000 in the Republic of Ireland and 40,000 sows in Northern Ireland. The breeding market is divided between Danish type pigs and Duroc, mentioned Jim lOng, CEO and President of Genesus Inc. after a visit in Ireland.
"The industry has had group housing for sows for over a decade. One producer said they threw out ESF (electronic sow feeding) systems long ago. Sows now in pens of about 20 sows with troughs and small stanchions for separation. Boars are not castrated which keeps slaughter weights lower than some countries, 115-120 kg maximum (250-260 lbs)", described Long the particularities of those markets.
Current prices in the Republic of Ireland are 1.38 Euros per kilogram (76c US Dollars), and in Northern Ireland are about 1.64 Euros per kilogram (91.65¢ US per lb), mentions the report. Last year, the profits registered by pig producers reached 50+ euros in Ireland.
The main export market for Irish pork is England but both producers of the Republic of Ireland and from Northern Ireland on their businesses, observed Jim Long. At this point, Duroc breed, promoted by Genesus Inc, has obtained 25% of the market share onIreland, the rest of the producers placing their bets on Danish breed.
