Prosciutto San Daniele PDO exports increased 6 percent in 2025

In 2025, Prosciutto di San Daniele PDO consolidated its position in international markets, posting overall export growth of +6% and reaching approximately 460,000 hams shipped abroad.

France and the United States remain the leading export destinations, each accounting for 23% of total exports. They are followed by:

  • Germany: 12%
  • Australia: 10%
  • Switzerland: 7%
  • Belgium: 7%
  • Austria: 4%

Prosciutto San Daniele’s performance in the United States was particularly significant, with volumes rising by +20% compared to 2024. Germany also delivered a strong result, recording +15% growth and reinforcing the product’s presence in two strategic markets.

The United Kingdom posted a highly dynamic growth of +37%, fully recovering market share lost in the wake of Brexit. Momentum also accelerated in emerging European destinations, with the Netherlands up +49% and Poland surging by +83%, marking the strongest percentage increases of the year. By contrast, Australia and Brazil recorded declines, affected by fluctuating export flows and contraction in local markets.

Geographically, exports show a substantial balance: 52% are destined for European Union countries, while 48% reach non-EU markets. The latter segment has increased its share by three percentage points over the past five years, underlining the consolidation of San Daniele’s presence in the most dynamic international markets.

In terms of format, 77% of exports consist of boneless hams, the preferred solution to meet logistical and distribution requirements abroad. The remaining 23% is represented by pre-sliced, tray-packed formats, catering to growing international ready-to-go demand.

“The growth recorded in international markets in 2025 confirms the value and global recognition of Prosciutto di San Daniele PDO,” said Nicola Martelli, President of the Consortium for the protection of Prosciutto di San Daniele.

Martelli highlighted that the +20% growth in the United States was also supported by advance purchasing ahead of the introduction of tariffs in the second half of last year. “Among the top four export countries are traditional markets such as France and Germany, alongside non-EU destinations like the United States and Australia. This reflects the strengthening of trade negotiations in third countries as well as the increasing competitiveness of the sector,” he added.

With exports now representing nearly one-fifth of total sales and non-EU markets gaining weight, 2025 marks a further step in the internationalization strategy of one of Italy’s most renowned PDO products.
