Rift Valley Fever outbreak forces Kenya region to ban sales of meat
Kenyan authorities estimate that since the start of June 50 livestock, mainly camels and sheep, have died.
In May, the local government had issued an alert for a possible outbreak of the disease after the country was hit by months of heavy rainfall.
This is the first outbreak of the disease since 2006 when more than 200 people died.
There is no specific treatment or human vaccine for this type of disease which is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes or close contact with animals’ blood or organs, according to the World Health Organization.
