Russia increased poultry meat exports in January-August 2022

Poultry meat exports from the Russian Federation to non-CIS countries and the EAEU in January-August increased by 27% compared to the same period last year, while supplies to China are declining and supplies to African countries are growing, said Sergei Lakhtyukhov, Director General of the National Union of Poultry Breeders.

"According to the estimates of our union, for 8 months in all directions, these are both non-CIS countries and the Eurasian Economic Union, growth (of exports - ed.) by 27%," Lakhtyukhov said during an agricultural forum, commenting on the data presented from the Union of Poultry Breeders. They indicate that the total export of poultry meat from the Russian Federation for this period amounted to 242,246 tons.

Lakhtyukhov noted that if in 2020 China accounted for more than 50% of all Russian poultry meat exports, now this figure is below 50%. "We have seriously increased the volume of deliveries to the MENA countries and, oddly enough, to the countries of Africa - they began to actively purchase Russian poultry products," he said, adding that this is not only broiler meat, but also turkey.

He noted that the turkey is a premium product, which is positioned and compared in the Russian Federation with beef and lamb. "But this expensive product was also tested by African countries. Rosselkhoznadzor even opened several directions this year for deliveries to Africa," recalled the director general of the National Union of Poultry Breeders.

"Beef is also showing growth. Pork has decreased in terms of exports, but this is a feature of the Chinese market," he also noted.

According to the materials of the union, the total export of meat from the Russian Federation to non-CIS countries and the EAEU in January-August increased by 14% compared to the same period last year - up to 346,970 tons. At the same time, pork exports in January-August decreased in annual terms by 10% - to 82,848 tons, and beef - increased by 8%, to 21,876 tons.

"Despite all the sanctions and restrictions, despite the key problems with logistics, the departure of international shipping lines, the inability for container ships to enter our ports, companies are looking for new mechanisms, new directions and have shown significant growth," Lakhtyukhov added.
