Slight decline in egg prices in the EU

The average price for 100 kilos of eggs in the EU is down by 3.8% compared with last month, reaching €124.99. However, compared with the same period from last year, egg prices have increased by 5.7%, according to the latest report from Eurostat.

The decline in prices was first observed in April and keeps going on since. The production is focused on enriched cage systems, representing almost 50% of the eggs produced in the EU market. However, the largest producer, Germany, has only 6% market share in enriched cage eggs and 61% market share in barn eggs. In the global market, the EU still ranks in second place among top egg exporters but it is closely followed by Malaysia. China and Singapore are the main importers of eggs, followed by the UK, Switzerland, EU and Japan.

Egg exports have decreased in the first 5 months by 24,000 tonnes (-15.7%) reflecting high consumption in the single market during the lockdown.
