The Central Veterinary Laboratory in Algete (Madrid) has confirmed three more wild boars testing positive for African swine fever (ASF). These boars were found near previously reported cases in the municipality of Cerdanyola del Vallés (Barcelona). With these new positive results, the disease has now been confirmed in a total of 16 wild animals.

Spain confirms the death of three more wild boars from ASF within the radius of the first outbreak

In addition, 115 other animal carcasses found dead in the natural environment or on roads and railways in the infected area and its surroundings have been analyzed, and have yielded negative results.

These findings are the result of intensive fieldwork carried out by the Generalitat's Rural Agents Corps, in collaboration with the Military Emergency Unit (UME), the Mossos d'Esquadra force, the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard and the local police, which includes the search for wild boar carcasses, the monitoring of unauthorized access to the infected area and the disinfection of vehicles and people.

The official veterinary services of Catalonia continue their visits and sample collection at 55 farms located in the area considered to be at highest risk - the municipalities included within a radius of 20 kilometers - which remain free of the disease.

The central and regional administrations remind everyone to maintain a high level of alert, with high biosecurity measures both on farms and in wild boar populations.

The scientific committee advising on the African swine fever outbreak held its first meeting, in which it agreed that within a maximum of a month and a half it will present an initial report analyzing the possible causes of the virus's entry, its evolution and the measures that have been adopted to date for its containment, with maximum uncertainty given the changing conditions of the disease, which remains uncontrolled.

The meeting approved the internal operating regulations that will govern the work. The six appointed scientists, along with the chair, vice-chair, and secretary, discussed the objectives assigned to them.

African swine fever is a disease that does not affect people, either through contact with animals or by ingesting products derived from them.
