Spanish White Pork Sector: Fighting against poverty

The Spanish white pork sector is one of the most important and powerful engines for generating employment and wealth in Spain, having reached a very broad and deep-rooted economic and social implantation, especially in rural areas where it represents a particularly important instrument in the fight against depopulation.

From the Spanish Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork (INTERPORC), as a non-profit entity made up of all sectors of the white pork value chain (production, transformation and commercialization), we can say that the white pork sector is committed with SDG 1 (No poverty) by providing safe and quality meat, and with high nutritional value at an affordable price, which contributes to complement the diet of the most disadvantaged people. This is also related to SDG 2 (Zero hunger).

Besides, the sector creates quality employment in rural areas, and contributes with some of the product lineswith lower proportion of waste in the entire Spanish foodsystem. Pork meat constitutes asource of minerals and vitamins in stages in which a higher supply of nutrients is needed, as in thepregnancy, lactation, or for the elderly.

These facts show that the sector will continue to promote a sustainable production model that allows the generation of employment and serves as the backbone of the territory, creating equitable and resilient societies.
