The EU approves Spain's proposal for a new zoning plan for African swine fever

The market's evolution has been discussed in an atmosphere of anticipation, given the price trends expected in the coming months.

The current situation regarding Iberian products has been assessed in order to continue working to defend the quality of Iberian products.

The European Union's Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed unanimously approved Spain's proposed new zoning plan for the area affected by African swine fever. Based on this new zoning, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food will develop a program that will allow farms located within the designated areas to move animals and products, provided they comply with certain health measures.

The approved proposal includes two zones: one, a surveillance zone where no cases have occurred, and two, which comprises the area where outbreaks have been detected. Each zone will have its corresponding requirements and measures.

This new zoning will replace the current one that was established when the first case was detected at the end of November in Cerdanyola del Vallés (Barcelona), a high-risk area, within a radius of 6 kilometers, and a lower-risk area, a 20-kilometer area that was fenced off and where control and surveillance work has been carried out.

The new zone allocation is not so circular, and is established based on administrative zones -municipalities-, with a more irregular shape, adapted to the municipal boundaries and geographical features, although at its thinnest point it comprises 20 kilometers.

The analysis of the situation of this disease has been one of the central themes of the meeting held by the pig sector, which was chaired by the Secretary General of Agricultural Resource and Food Safety, Ana Rodríguez, and in which she reported on the work of controlling the disease in the infected area, focused on the control of wildlife, the establishment of fences and other barriers, as well as the measures put in place to reduce the populations of wild boar in the area.

So far, 31 outbreaks have been recorded, resulting in a total of 162 wild boar deaths  across seven municipalities: Cerdanyola del Vallès, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Sant Quirze del Vallès, Terrassa, Rubí, Molins de Rei, and Sant Feliu de Llobregat. All of these outbreaks are located within a 20-kilometer radius of the initial outbreak, which has been fenced off. All cases have involved wild animals; no pig farms have been affected.

One of the central aspects of the meeting was the evolution of the market. Production, which has increased dramatically in recent years, reached 5.3 million tons with 56.3 million head slaughtered, according to provisional data for 2025.

The evolution of prices since the declaration of the African swine fever outbreak in wild animals last November has also been analyzed. In week 5 of this year, the price for class E carcasses was €1.285/kg; a figure that is 32.94% lower than the price for the same week last year and also below the average prices of the last five years (-26.13%).
