The UK gets a review on post-Brexit food strategy

Great Britain is preparing its first food strategy in the last 75 years. Henry Dimbleby was appointed by the Environment Secretary Michael Gove to conduct a year-long review, and to then set out recommendations within six months of its completion, before the government will publish the multi-disciplinary National Food Strategy.
For now, representatives of the industry are looking to express their point of view in this program. "We’ve got an excellent opportunity to sustainably feed people in this country; with food producers, government, and society all playing their part. A system that puts food on the tables of those most at risk of hunger and malnutrition will ensure feeding people remains at the heart of society.

Food is a special case, it should be treated as a national security issue, and be protected as such. The British Poultry Council is looking forward to working with Henry Dimbleby and his team to help support the creation of a much-awaited national food strategy that ensures everyone has access to safe, wholesome and affordable food, including the most vulnerable," said Richard Griffiths, British Poultry Council Chief Executive. In 2018, the food produced in the UK was consumed in the first 8 months of the year. The country's food self-sufficiency stands at 67%, according to official data.
