The meat industry generates €44.37 billion for the Spanish economy
The study emphasizes that for every euro generated directly by the meat industry, an additional €4.80 is created in the economy as a whole, consolidating its role as one of the main drivers of economic activity in Spain.
The meat industry comprises more than 3,000 companies and exports more than €12.36 billion annually, representing nearly a quarter of all Spanish agri-food exports.
The study also highlights its powerful driving effect on the local economy, as more than one in three euros generated by this activity are allocated to the primary sector, reinforcing its key role in economic and rural development.
The Spanish National Meat Industry Association (ANICE) and the Spanish Federation of Meat and Meat Processing Companies (FECIC) presented in Madrid the study “The Economic Contribution of the Meat Industry in Spain,” prepared by Afi (International Financial Analysts).
The report's findings demonstrate the strategic importance of the meat industry as one of the main drivers of the Spanish economy, both for its direct contribution to wealth creation and for its capacity to boost activity in numerous sectors linked to the agri-food chain.
ANICE's Director General, Giuseppe Aloisio, opened the event, highlighting the positive results reflected in the report and emphasizing the sector's strategic importance. “This study demonstrates with objective data that the meat industry is much more than a transformative activity. We are a strategic sector that generates wealth, employment, exports, and opportunities in thousands of municipalities across our country. Furthermore, we act as a powerful engine for livestock farming and for the entire Spanish agri-food chain,” Aloisio pointed out.
During the meeting, Ana Domínguez, Head of Applied Economics at Afi, presented the report's main conclusions, offering a detailed view of the economic, social, and industrial relevance of the meat chain, as well as its impact on job creation, business activity, exports, and value creation throughout the country.
“The meat industry represents approximately 2.8% of Spain's GDP and generates more than €44.37 billion in Gross Value Added, including direct, indirect, and induced impacts. For every euro produced directly, an additional €4.80 are generated for the economy as a whole,” Domínguez emphasized during her presentation.
The report also highlights the sector's international strength. The Spanish meat industry exports more than €12.36 billion annually, representing nearly a quarter of all Spanish agri-food exports and maintaining a positive trade balance of over €8.4 billion, thus consolidating its position as one of the country's leading export industries.
Another key finding of the report is the meat industry's strong multiplier effect on the overall economy, with the primary sector being the main beneficiary.
Specifically, more than one in three euros generated by these multiplier effects are allocated to the agricultural sector. This represents approximately 35.1% of the total indirect impact and translates into more than €8.9 billion in Gross Value Added for this sector.
For their part, social security contributions account for the largest share of the meat industry's contribution to public coffers, at approximately 46.5% of the total (€1.305 billion).
"Overall, the sector's direct contribution exceeds €2.8 billion, including VAT, personal income tax, corporate tax, social security contributions, and the Special Tax on Non-Reusable Plastic Packaging."
In his closing remarks, FECIC Secretary General Ignasi Pons emphasized the importance of rigorous studies that allow for quantifying the sector's true contribution to the Spanish economy.
“This type of analysis provides objective and verified information to understand the economic and social dimension of an industry that is essential for Spain. In addition to generating wealth and employment, the meat industry plays a fundamental role in territorial cohesion, export activity, the support of thousands of livestock farms, and its capacity to boost economic activity in numerous sectors linked to the agri-food chain,” Pons pointed out.
