The reopening of the Chinese market to chicken meat is a result of Brazil's technical and diplomatic competence
Along with controlling and eradicating the disease in a short period of time, and clarifying the situation with international authorities – with the rapid resumption of IAAP-free status before the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOH) – Brazilian authorities dedicated extensive diplomatic efforts to re-establishing the flow of trade in the suspended markets. This was especially due to the work led by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, his Secretaries of International Relations and Trade, Luís Rua, and of Agricultural Defense, Carlos Goulart, and their teams, engaging even the Presidency, the Vice-Presidency of the Republic, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the negotiations.
Gradually, all major importers of chicken meat resumed purchases. Recently, the European Union announced the resumption of shipments. Today, China, the last major importer of chicken meat to be shut down, reopened its ports to Brazilian products.
“There was extensive and highly professional negotiation work in this process, which included the renegotiation of sanitary certificates to avoid total suspensions of countries in the event of new occurrences. Alongside this, there was a broad and intense diplomatic effort undertaken by the Brazilian Government, together with private entities led by ABPA, to resume exports from the suspended markets. The reopening of China crowns the success of this great coordinated action under the leadership of Minister Fávaro and his team”, emphasizes the president of ABPA, Ricardo Santin.
Until May, the month in which IAAP occurred, China was the largest importer of chicken meat from Brazil. Between January and May alone, the country had imported 228,200 tons of chicken meat (10.4% of the total exported by Brazil up to that point), generating revenue of US$ 545.8 million.
