Trump removed the 40% tariff on Brazilian beef
According to the statement released by the White House, the decision responds to the technical recommendations received by the president and the progress of bilateral negotiations with Brazil.
In the text, Trump stated that he "determined that it is necessary and appropriate to modify the scope of products subject to the additional ad valorem tax imposed by Executive Decree 14323".
Unlike the measure announced the previous week, which eliminated an additional 10% tariff for all affected countries, this resolution applies exclusively to Brazil. Furthermore, it stipulates that the exemptions will be retroactive to November 13, the date of the meeting between Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The document also stipulates that amounts already paid by Brazilian exporters will be refunded, stating that "refunds will be processed in accordance with applicable legislation and the standard procedures of U.S. Customs and Border Protection".
In the order, Trump recalled that on October 6 he held a telephone conversation with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in which they both agreed to begin negotiations to address the critical points of Executive Decree 14323, a process that is still ongoing.
After the resolution was announced, the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries (ABIEC) celebrated the decision and stated that it reflects the effectiveness of the technical dialogue and diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Brazilian government.
