Turkey resumes egg exports to EU after 6 years

Bedri Girit, Vice Chairman of The Aegean Fisheries and Animal Product Exporters Association confirms that it is over two months now since the export of eggs was resumed to the European market, mentioned Daily Sabah.

Egg productions in Europe have dropped after multiple batches were found contaminated with Fipronil, an insecticide used in different countries. The pastry and cake industry are now confronted with a lack of pasteurized eggs.

For now, Turkey exports only category B eggs in the EU, although Girit claims that there are small differences between B and A category. "They preferred us because they knew that our products are healthy. We have started exporting category B products. There is little difference between category A and category B products. Eggs that will be pasteurized are classified in the B category. We do not export category A eggs that can be sold directly to consumers", said Bedri Girit who claims that there are also political reasons for keeping the A category eggs out from the European market.

Last year, Turkey's egg export grew by almost 25-30 percent, due to regaining access to the markets from EU and Iran and a strong demand from UAE. Egg exports generated 377 million dollars for Turkey, Greece, Romania, and Spain being the main European markets for Turkish exporters.
