US: Egg exports gain in volume, value

U.S. broiler exports for January through October this year decreased by 3.9 percent in volume and 10.3 percent in value from the same period of last year, while egg exports increased by10 percent in volume and 20.5 percent in value, according to new trade data released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. Turkey exports were up 14.7 percent in volume but down 4.3 percent in value.

Mexico, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Iraq, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Georgia, Haiti, Qatar, Nicaragua, Peru, El Salvador, Congo (Kinshasa), Honduras, and Mozambique registered tremendous gains in broiler exports from the same period a year earlier.

Broiler exports for the first ten months of 2023 were 3,038,888 metric tons, down 3.9 percent from the same period of last year, while export value was $3.968 billion, down 10.3 percent (Figure 1). Of the total shipment, 55.3 percent or 1,679,946 tons were shipped to the top six markets, including Mexico, China, Taiwan, Cuba, Philippines, and Canada.

Shipments to Mexico in January-October 2023 were 598,445 metric tons, up 10.7 percent from the same period a year earlier. During the same period, Brazilian chicken exports to Mexico reached 154,641 metric tons, up 21.0 percent year over year, while Chilean chicken exports to Mexico were 22,644 metric tons, down 6.5 percent.

Exports to China decreased by 29.9 percent to 372,326 tons (of which 68.2 percent or 253,833 metric tons were chicken paws), while shipments to Taiwan increased by 10.7 percent to 227,574 tons. Exports to other important markets were Cuba, 217,016 tons, down 2.9 percent; Philippines, 144,133 tons, down 11.6 percent; Canada, 120,451 tons, down 8.2 percent; Guatemala, 118,648 tons, up 8.4 percent; Vietnam, 94,516 tons, down 8.5 percent; Angola, 86,772 tons, down 35.2 percent; Congo (Brazzaville), 70,154 tons, up 1.5 percent.

Broiler exports in October 2023 were 309,750 metric tons, down 12.1 percent from the same month of last year, while export value was $418.8 million, down 11.2 percent. Shipments to Mexico increased by 1.6 percent year over year to 62,611 metric tons, while exports to China decreased by 37.8 percent to 34,014 tons (of which 75.4 percent or 25,661metric tons were chicken paws). Shipments to Philippines increased by 9.7 percent to 21,706 tons, while exports to Vietnam decreased by 8.6 percent to 15,698 tons. While exports to Iraq, Hong Kong, Haiti, Costa Rica, Turkmenistan, Guatemala, Gambia, and Dominican Republic increased notably year over year, exports to Angola, Cuba, Colombia, Taiwan, Chile, Kazakhstan, Congo (Brazzaville), and Georgia decreased significantly.

Cumulative turkey exports for January through October this year reached 180,456 metric tons, up 14.7 percent from the same period a year earlier, while export value was $515.0 million, down 4.3 percent (Figure 2). Of the total quantity exported, 79.5 percent or 143,414 metric tons were shipped to the top six markets, including Mexico, Canada, Peru, Jamaica, Panama, and Guatemala, with Mexico alone accounting for 67.9 percent or 122,614 metric tons.

Turkey exports in October 2023 reached 24,005 metric tons, up 49.5 percent from the same month of last year, while export value was $63.4 million, up 6.9 percent. Shipments to Mexico increased by 53.1 percent to 16,536 metric tons, while exports to Guatemala rose by 30.7 percent to 712 metric tons. Exports to Canada were 598 metric tons, down 21.1 percent from October 2022, while exports to Panama were 519 metric tons, up 4.1 percent. Also, Exports to Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Japan, Gabon, Haiti, Leeward-Windward Islands, Congo (Brazzaville), Bahamas, and Costa Rica increased notably year over year.

Total egg exports (table eggs plus egg products in shell egg equivalent) from January to October of this year increased by 10.0 percent to 148.8 million dozen. The value of those exports increased by 20.5 percent to $247.3 million (Figure 3).

Cumulative exports of table eggs for the first ten months of this year were 75.4 million dozen, up 31.6 percent from the same period of last year, while export value reached $137.4 million, up 31.4 percent. Of the total shipments, 87.6 percent or 66.0 million dozen were shipped to the top six export markets, namely Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, Bahamas, Netherlands Antilles, and United Kingdom.

Table egg exports for October 2023 reached 8.3 million dozen, up 77.6 percent from the same month of last year, while export value was $10.7 million, down 18.8 percent. October exports to Canada hit 4.0 million dozen, up 34.3 percent year over year, while exports to Mexica reached 1.9 million dozen, as compared to merely 1,058 dozen for October 2022. While exports to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, Netherlands Antilles, and Haiti increased notably, shipments to Bahamas, EU-27, and Turks and Caicos Islands decreased significantly.

For egg products, exports in January-October 2023 reached 25,027 metric tons, up 21.8 percent from the same period of last year, while export value totaled $109.9 million, up 9.3 percent. Exports to the top six markets including Japan, Mexico, EU-27, Canada, South Korea, and Bahamas accounted for 86.9 percent or $95.5 million.

October exports of egg products were 2,210 metric tons, down 0.1 percent from the same month of last year, while export value reached $11.5 million, up 23.8 percent. Export sales to Japan were $3.8 million, up 2.0 percent year over year, while export value to EU-27 reached $2.3 million, up 44.7 percent. While export sales to Australia, Vietnam, United Kingdom, Philippines, Taiwan, and Panama increased notably, export value to Canada, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago decreased significantly.
