US pork processing capacity back at 95%
USDA announced that pork processing plants in the country are getting back on track, reaching 95% of the total capacity. Te recovery was supported by the presidential order signed by Donald Trump at the end of April, which orders food processing units across the country to remain online. However, doubts about the workforce security are still in place, according to a British analyst.
"This comes following President Trump’s executive order on the 28 April for meat plants to stay open. However, numerous reports suggest that US meat plants are still suffering with COVID-19 cases," commented Hannah Clarke, analyst for AHDB.
Nevertheless, the recovery is good news for pork producers in the US, as many of them have been pushed to the brink of bankruptcy due to losses registered between April and May. According to the National Pork Producers Council, at the beginning of May, pork processing capacity in the US was down 40% compared to the same period last year. Pork production for April was down 11% year-on-year as a result.
