US: Pig population at constant level

In the United States, the pig population remained virtually stable in March 2025 compared to the previous year. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), a total of 74.51 million pigs were kept in the United States on March 1, 2025. The decline in breeding animals was also moderate, at 0.6% to 5.98 million.

As the USDA also reported last week, US swine producers plan to farrow a total of 2.91 million sows between March and May 2025. This would be 0.2% fewer than the same period last year. Between June and August 2025, the number is expected to be 2.96 million sows, down 0.8% from the same period last year. From December 2024 to February 2025, an average of 11.65 piglets per litter were weaned, exceeding the previous year's level by 0.12 animals, or 1.0%.
