Ukraine opens its market for Lithuanian sheep and goats
Lithuanian authorities have come to an agreement with their Ukrainian counterparts on the veterinary requirements for the breeding of livestock destined for export. Lithuania's veterinary watchdog expects this new deal to benefit the country's sheep and goat producers.
According to the data of the State Enterprise Agricultural Information and Rural Business Center (Ž?IKVC), although there is just a slight increase in the number of sheep farms in Lithuania, the number of sheep is constantly growing. Currently, there are 10,542 sheep farms registered with a number of 176,389 animals.
Goat farms are relatively small - 4 159, they contain 15 088 goats, and this figure varies slightly.
In 2017, Lithuania exported 2,536 sheep to other countries for fattening of slaughter. By September this year, the Lithuanian sheep exports reach 2,800 animals for fattening or slaughtering.
