Ukrainian poultry re-enters the EU market
Ukrainian poultry producer may resume exports to the EU market starting March 7 after the European Union has accepted the regionalization of the Vinnytsia Region in Ukraine. Farms in the region have been hit by the H5N8 bird flu in January leading to a temporary ban placed on Ukrainian poultry.
The country is one of the major suppliers of poultry in the EU market, ranking 3, behind Brazil and Thailand, with 134,262 tonnes shipped in the single market in 2019, up 8.6% compared to the previous year.
At the same time, the volume of chicken imported from the EU is larger than exported. In absolute terms, Ukraine imported 178,124 tonnes of poultry meat from the EU in 2018 and 178,619 tonnes last year. At the end of February, Ukrainian poultry products were banned in China due to the same bird flu situation.
