Uruguayan meat tastings have been a success at Gulfood
Gulfood is one of the most relevant food fairs in the Middle East, bringing together the main commercial players of a region that has two attractive qualities for food exporting countries: on the one hand, it is a region particularly dependent on imports to supply the domestic consumption and on the other, this situation implies that their default tariffs are low: for beef, they are between 0% and 5% depending on the product.
Specifically in terms of meat trade, the member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are positioned as the most attractive in the Middle East region in terms of demand (these are Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates). In 2023, the GCC exceeded $1.9 billion in imported beef, accumulating a 70% increase in value over the last decade. Brazil represents more than 50% of the supply, while Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada cover around 20% of the imported meat market, achieving prices for frozen boneless meat that exceeded $7,200 per ton of carcass weight.
Uruguay exported beef worth 12 million dollars to this region in 2023, with the United Arab Emirates being the main destination with 40% of the supply. Saudi Arabia positioned itself as the second most relevant destination for Uruguayan exports to the GCC.
