Vietnam expects an ASF vaccine next year
Vietnam is gradually increasing its pig inventory in a bid to restock commercial farms. According to official data, the total pig inventory by September 2020 has increased by about 3.6% over the same period last year. Though the output of live-weight pork for the first nine months of 2020 is estimated at 2.48 million tons, down 3.2% over the same period in 2019 and only in the third quarter of 2020 has reached 846,200 tons - an increase of 9.7% compared to the third quarter 2019.
Calculations made by the General Department of Customs shows that, in the first 8 months of 2020, Vietnam imported 64,660 tons of fresh, chilled, or frozen pork, worth $152.56 million, up 272.6% in volume and an increase of 352.6% in value over the same period in 2019. Meantime, between November 22, 2020, and December 17, 2020, there were 19 backyard farms hit by ASF outbreaks, with 116 animals culled. The fact that none of the commercial farms in the country has been impacted by the disease lately is an encouraging signal for companies to restock their herds. However, the restocking process is still slow. Price for breeding animals has been continuously high since the beginning of the year, so restock is mainly concentrated in large farms, informs Paul A. Anderson, General Manager South-East Asia/International Sales Manager, Genesus Inc.
The situation may change next autumn, when Vietnam may be the first country in the world to have a vaccine against African Swine Fever, as experts are predicting.
