" Many foods are today eaten as a snack on the premises or increasingly, too, on the move – snack-meals are very much on trend. This is an area where herb and spice companies often provide recipes and new ideas, as well as the herbs and spices themselves. The paradigm shift towards better quality and a greater ethical awareness of food on the part of the consumer shows itself, too, in the increasing demand for organically produced spices. Suppliers are reacting to this and constantly building up their offer of organic products", it is said in the press release.
At IFFA, from 4 to 9 May 2019 in Frankfurt am Main, the top suppliers from Germany and abroad will be presenting themselves and their products relating to the product group of Ingredients, Herbs, Spices, Additives, Skins and Casings in the new exhibition hall 12.1.
Messe Frankfurt is expecting over 1,000 exhibitors from some 50 countries. 2986 | Blunt reality on post-Brexit trade deals | "Everything comes at a price", it's the message sent to the British meat industry after this year's BMPA Conference. |
Speakers invited at BMPA Conference this year have pictured a blunt image for the British meat industry on post-Brexit trade deals. Bill Westman of the North American Meat Institute and Lars Hoelgaard of the international consultancy TradeUp were called on the stage to tell the participants ‘how it is’, first from a US and then from an EU perspective.
Bill Westman was keen to emphasise that the US wants to work with the UK and sees ‘big opportunities around Brexit’, but it became clear that this cooperation would come at a price. Part of that price, Mr Westman explained, is that the US ‘must have meaningful market access through the elimination or reduction of all import duties and tariff-rate quotas’.

He went on to say that America doesn’t want to ask the UK to change its system, but it does want to ask us to not restrict trade in goods that are ‘internationally approved’. In practice, however, that would mean changing UK standards to allow currently banned products into the country.

Lars Hoelgaard put it more bluntly: "You’re going to take some hormone beef, some chlorinated chicken and some GMOs’ in order to do a deal with Trump’s America. He also cautioned that we’d be giving up 50% of our trade (currently with the EU) in favour of chasing after some ‘marginal, perhaps non-existent’ trade with the US. ‘Is this what you want?" asked Mr Hoelgaard.
Peter Hardwick, BMPA’s Trade Policy Advisor, emphasised that there is no way of knowing just how the meat industry will be traded-off against other key industries in future trade negotiations with third countries like the US. Trade deals are about compromise and there will be no ‘easy deals’ to be done. The main conclusion in the future relationship with the EU is that unless Brexit is cancelled or the UK agree on some form of a customs union and harmonised regulations and standards, the industry should prepare for a bumpy ride.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-06-10 01:28:28 | 2025-04-27 21:11:42 | Details Edit Delete | ||

4692 | Spain expects another record year for pork exports to the Philippines | In the first two months of 2021, 41% of the total value of exports made last year in this market has already covered. |
Spanish pork exports to the Filipino market are set for another record year, informs the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA). Last year, Spanish pork exports to the Southeast Asian country reached €98.50 million but, in the last two months of 2021, pork exports to the Philippines have already covered 41% of that figure. Spanish exports of pork meat and offal to the Philippines reached between January and February a total of 26,048 tonnes worth €41.18 million, according to data released by MAPA.
The continuous drop in the Filipino pig inventory is expected to last through the year, according to estimates made by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The last PSA report, released in April, shows that the national pig inventory has decreased by 24% between 2019 and 2021, from 12.7 million head to 9.72 million. Slaughter figures have decreased by 2.0% and 6.6% for the last two years, while the losses (deaths) reported by the industry 1.173 million head in 2019 (up 15% from 2018) and 1.562 million last year (up 33.2% from the previous year).
In this way, a structural deficit in local pork production is expected that will require an increase in foreign imports to be able to meet domestic demand and contribute to price stabilization and national food security.
In fact, a significant reduction in tariffs on these products along with an increase in minimum access volumes has already been applied by the Filipino government in the last couple of months, followed by several adjustments made to protect the local sector.
| 1 | Market | 2021-05-18 08:51:39 | 2025-04-27 21:40:11 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2069 | 79 arrested in Spain for illegally smuggling bluefin tuna |
Spanish police arrested 79 suspects in a case regarding illegally smuggling bluefin tuna from Italy and Malta into Spain. The operation had been taking in an estimated €12.5 million annually.
The operation revealed a large network of fishing companies and distributors were involved in the ring, including one of Europe’s biggest seafood farming companies, the Spanish Ricardo Fuentes and Sons Group, according to Europol. Investigators found the fish had been caught illegally in Italian and Maltese waters, imported to Spain via French harbours, and was then traded illegally in Spain. The bluefin from Malta was imported illegally using documents from legal fishing and authorized farms, while the fish caught in Italian waters arrived in Spain without documents or inspections. Additionally, some of the fish seized in the raid had been caught in Spanish waters and transported in false bottoms under the deck of a fishing vessel, Europol said in a press release. Several people became sick after eating the products brought into the country illegally, likely as a result of the unhygienic conditions the fish was stored after being caught and transported.
Police seized 80,000 kilos of bluefin tuna of illicit origin, in addition to €500,000 in cash and jewellery, seven high-end vehicles collectively valued at more than €600,000 and documents demonstrating the tuna was caught illegally and smuggled into Spain.
Samantha Burgess, Head of Marine Policy for WWF Europe, called for the European Parliament and Council to revisit the E.U.’s regulations to ensure compliance with the rules through improved monitoring and control methods, including digitization of records.

"This level of smuggled fish and black money occurring on the European market in 2018 contravenes the leadership role that the EU is taking in the global fight against illegal fishing. Only through digitization of records to trace where fish were caught can we remove the legal loopholes and ensure each member state takes their responsibilities seriously to prevent more illegal fish entering the E.U. market," she said, according to Seafood Source magazine.
Next month, from 12 to 19 November, Croatia will host the meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
| 1 | Industry | 2018-10-19 09:19:41 | 2025-04-28 00:43:47 | Details Edit Delete | |||

"For 2020, the Spanish market is optimistic, against the fact that African swine fever (ASF) is still a threat to Europe. This year's price started at €1.49/kg live weight, up by almost 45% compared with the one recorded in January 2019 (€1,038/kg live weight). As new year prices are going strong, there are rumors of expansion, but China and ASF still cast a shadow of uncertainty over the industry, added Mrs. Vega.
However, slaughter capacity has been increased last year, with the entry into operation of the new facilities of the Pini Group, which is already processing around 70,000 pigs per week.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-01-30 06:41:07 | 2025-04-27 23:11:00 | Details Edit Delete | |||
2264 | Canada and Spain are working together to increase pork and beef trade | Spanish organizations ANAFRIC and FECIC have initiated contacts to strengthen commercial relations with Canada for beef and pork. |
Spanish organizations ANAFRIC and FECIC have recently initiated contact with Canadian counterparts and government officials to discuss trade relations in the beef and pork sectors between the two countries. The objective of this meeting was to find formulas to boost the commercial exchanges of beef and pork between Spain and Canada under the umbrella of the Global Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
Even with a tariff quota for export to the EU established under the CETA, Spanish imports of Canadian goods in this two sectors are very scarce. In this sense that Canada is making important efforts to produce beef according to European specifications (without hormones).
Canada has some 68,000 cattle farms concentrated mainly in the west of the country (75%) and fattening about 2.5 million animals (it is the 11th largest producer in the world). It is the 6th world exporter of beef (4.3% of world trade), not far from the EU (3.9%). Canada exports mainly to the United States (72% of its production), and imports from the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, with a net export/import balance of 25%.
As for swine production in Canada, it is based on some 7,000 farms concentrated in the east of the country (Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba), which are very oriented to the production of piglets for the United States. They export almost 70% of their meat products to Japan, the United States, and China, and are increasingly betting on high-valued chilled products, instead of frozen meat. The signing this year of the CPTPP opens new opportunities for Canadian red meat in Asian countries.
At this time, Spain is the fourth supplier of pork in the Canadian market, accounting for 2.6% of its imports and there are opportunities to acquire a larger market share as it has experienced constant growth in recent years.

At the meeting were present, John Masswhol (Canadian Cattlemen Association), Gary Stordy (Canadian Pork Council), Felipe Macías (Canadian Beef) and Máximo Hurtado (Agri-Food Commissioner of the Embassy of Canada in Spain) met with Carolina Cucurella (ANAFRIC) and Carlos García (FECIC).
| 1 | Market | 2018-11-29 11:42:44 | 2025-04-27 22:18:22 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1514 | "Animal Terrorism" is spreading through Europe | Following France, Spain is now confronted with a series of attacks that target slaughterhouses and small enterprises in the meat industry. |
Spanish National Police force is investigating a series of attacks that took place last week in Granda, Asturia, and targeted some vans owned by a meat producer in the area.
Two vans of a company in the parish of Granda (Gijón) appeared burned and it was found that accelerating substances had been used to cause the fire.

The action, claimed by the Animal Liberation Front, is not an isolated incident in Asturias, where in recent times similar attacks have also occurred in a slaughterhouse in Siero and in the vicinity of the Mieres slaughterhouse, informs CdeComunicacion portal.
The attacks are targeting small enterprises in the meat industry and that raises concern among the members of the Asturian Association of Meat Industries, ASINCAR.
84 companies have been warned by the leaders of the association to take supplementary security measures in the light of the attacks.
"We are concern about the damage that these events may cause in companies in the sector. It is not an isolated event since in recent days the organization would have shown the intention to attack companies engaged in the marketing of meat products in the region", president of ASINCAR, Cesar García, declared in a statement.
Investigators called these actions a new form of terror, "animal terrorism", and they might be right considering the fact that France is also confronted lately with a series of attacks that target butchershops, restaurants and other small enterprises in the meat sector.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-07-01 08:47:36 | 2025-04-27 21:55:38 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2155 | Famous Iberian ham gets its American replica | American Iberian ham is produced in Georgia from imported Spanish pigs that are feed with pecan nuts. |
Spanish most known delicacy, Jamon, Iberian ham, is now replicated in the US by the Oriol family, originary from Spain. Their enterprise, Iberian Pastures, is located in Georgia and the black pigs (pata negra) are imported from Spain in order to respect the tradition imposed by the Iberian ham producers, reports ABC newspaper of Spain.

The difference consists of the nuts that are used in feeding the animals. In this case, the Oriol family is using the pecan nuts instead of acorn, as the Spaniards use to do. "We have tested the profile of fatty acids with peanuts and nuts and they are very similar to the type of fat of a pig fed with acorns", says Kurt Oriol, one the family members. The environmental conditions in Georgia are similar to those meet in the Spanish hills except one thing: the humidity. That's why the Jamon "made in America" is dried in a storage in Iowa. On the other hand, the pastures in Georgia are green almost all year round, while in Spain the situation is different. This is the reason why Iberian Pastures hope that its product will rival the famous Spanish ham not only in price but also in quality. "We think it will affect positively because the herb is a natural antioxidant and is good for healing", added Kurt Oriol.
At this time, prices for Jamon (Iberian ham) on international markets are between $1,000 and $1,500 and the US market was confronted for many years with counterfeit products and smuggled products.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-07 15:03:53 | 2025-04-27 21:48:31 | Details Edit Delete | ||
