Hungary: no one should buy live poultry from bird flu areas!

Poultry

An increasing number of online ads offering live poultry are appearing from areas subject to restrictions due to the bird flu epidemic, primarily from Bács-Kiskun county. The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) draws the attention of those concerned that, in addition to this being a serious violation of the rules and an illegal activity, it also poses a serious risk, as it can easily lead to the spread of the epidemic and the infection of still untouched counties.

Hungary: no one should buy live poultry from bird flu areas!

In recent days, Nébih has received several reports that live poultry from restricted Bács-Kiskun county areas, are being offered for sale throughout the country on internet advertising portals. According to the currently valid regulations, animals can only be transported from these restricted areas to slaughterhouses only on the basis of favorable preliminary tests. Since the disease is also spread by infected animals, the advertisements, in addition to being considered a serious violation of the rules, also pose a serious epidemiological risk, as they can contribute to the infection of counties that are still free of the virus with birds that may carry the virus.

Nébih will contact the relevant service providers and will continue to pay close attention to the appearance of similar advertisements, punishing those who break the rules with serious fines. Given the serious risk, animal keepers who are proven to contribute to the spread of the epidemic with their activities must also face a court report.

Irresponsible livestock behavior can cause serious economic damage to hundreds of farmers. That is why Nébih draws attention to the fact that under no circumstances should one buy live poultry from restricted areas.
