240 ASF cases in Germany

By the end of the first week of December, the total number of African swine fever (ASF) cases in Germany has reached 240, with 225 found in wild boar population in the state of Brandenburg and 15 more found in the state of Saxony. Even if the disease has been discovered only in wild boars exports to third markets such as China, Japan and South Korea have been banned. Pig prices in Germany have dropped in the last two months and a half losing about €0.21 and impacted the average pig price in the EU market which is now 3% lower than a month ago. However, most of the German pork that was supposed to go to the Asian markets is now redirected inside the EU market, with Romania and Poland increasing demand for the product as they are confronted with an ASF crisis that has impacted commercial exploitations. German pig farmers are suffering the double blow of lower prices and reduced slaughterhouse capacity following the coronavirus crisis, German agriculture minister Julia Kloeckner said at the end of November. According to Reuters, German authorities are working on state aid for the pig market, such as subsidised storage of unsold pork as one of the options considered, but the measure will not come into force immediately.
