37% drop in Brazilian poultry genetics exports
In January, Brazilian poultry genetics exports were down by 37.2%, according to figures released by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). Hatching eggs and poultry genetic material exported from Brazil stood at 1,190 tonnes due to increased demand in the domestic market, where broiler breeders are hoping to see important growth in poultry exports to China.
"Since poultry meat exports from Brazil went up, Brazil has been prioritizing the breeding of broiler chicks. This was expected as a step to meet domestic and external demand for animal protein," said Ricardo Santin, ABPA executive director, in a press release.
In January, 1,120 tons of hatching eggs were exported from Brazil, down 38.2% year-on-year and grossing USD 4.8 million, down 40.1%. Genetic material exports came out to 73 tons, down 16%, with revenue dropping 33.7% to USD 4.3 million.
Meantime, Brazilian poultry exports for the first month of 2020 reached 301,000 tonnes, up 15% compared to January 2019, according to official data. However, compared to the previous month, the volume has dropped by 17%. The average price for poultry has increased, reaching $1,620/t and going up by 20% from the value of poultry exports recorded in January 2019.
Last year, the Brazilian poultry sector saw an increase of 28% in exports to China and the production of chicken meat was slightly above 13 million tonnes (up 2.3%). Egg production was also higher than in 2018 reaching 49 billion units produced (up 10%).
