79% increase in Spanish meat exports in January

Spain had a spike of 79% in meat exports in January thanks to increased demand for pork from China. Except for beef exports, which are down 43% compared with January 2020, every type of meat produced in Spain reported a significant increase in exports: pig meat totalled 202,102 tonnes ( +89% ), sheep and goat meat stood at 1,110 tonnes (+63%) and poultry reached 7,020 tonnes ( +7%).
China took 166,605 tonnes of meat from Spain (mainly pork), up 124% compared to January last year, fueling the expectations of Spanish meat exporters. It was followed by the Philippines (11,159 tonnes). Indonesia was the main market for Spanish beef in January, Qatar supported the increase in sheepmeat exports, while the main destination for poultry was South Africa, according to statistical data published by the Spanish Livestock External Trade Service (CEXGAN).
Recently, China reported a spike in pork prices (including a rally of 4% in hog futures at Dalian Commodity Exchange) due to disease outbreaks in the pig herd. Last month, new strains of African swine fever were affecting production on breeding farms in China, according to Reuters. So far, analysts are expecting pig meat prices to remain high in the Chinese market. Spain is one of the main suppliers in the Chinese pig market and may increase its presence due to the ban placed by Beijing on German pork.
