AI forces UK's authorities to extend the Prevention Zone measures
An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) was introduced by the Welsh government in order to mitigate the risk of bird flu infection in the area. The measure is following a similar one imposed by England just a week ago.
"Although we have had, as yet, no findings of Avian Influenza in 2018, I consider this Prevention Zone and the requirement for enhanced biosecurity to be proportionate to the risk level faced in Wales. It is essential we take steps to protect our poultry industry, international trade and the wider economy in Wales", said Lesley Griffiths, the Welsh Government's Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs, according to Farming UK magazine.
Poultry breeders and owners of other captive birds are requested to check on their health and to inform quickly the authorities in case of any sign of disease. The H5N6 virus was discovered in wild birds crossing UK territory. 31 birds have been discovered carrying the virus in England which forced the authorities to implement the AIPZ measure. The level of risk is described as medium.
