ASF crisis in the Dominica Republic triggers the alarm in the Americas
African Swine fever resurfaced in the Dominican Republic after 40 years and the future impact of the outbreak worries analysts. Scott Brown, a livestock economist from the University of Missouri expects the market to be rattled in short term, as the situation in the Dominican Republic poses a certain risk for large producers and exporters of pork from the Americas such as the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina.
"I think we want to be careful about how much we react to what we’re seeing in the Dominican Republic. This reminds us to keep our guards up here in the United States, but the spread to the Dominican Republic certainly is going to have folks’ attention out of the gate tomorrow. Even though we might talk about futures markets that continue to have pressure, to provide some type of safety net for yourself as an operation against the small likelihood we would see ASF here," he declared in a podcast for Brownfield AgNews.
Professional associations from the countries mentioned above are already responding to the possible threat of an outbreak in the region. US Customs and Border Protection has increased the intensity of their inspections for ports of entry coming out of the Caribbean, plus stepping up enforcement of garbage handling on vessels from that area, as an example.
The National Pork Producers Council is advising pig farmers to have better control of the visitors entering their farms and to closely monitor feed suppliers. Preventive care for the industry is recommended by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), who showed concern about the situation in the Dominican Republic. Also, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture is ready to provide support for the Dominica authorities. "The Animal Health Department of the Agriculture and Livestock Defense Secretariat of the Ministry of Agriculture is in close contact with the animal health authorities of the Dominican Republic, with regional organizations and with the OIE representation in the Americas, with a view to deepening knowledge of the situation. Furthermore, it is providing support for the elimination of the outbreaks and containment of the spread of the virus, allowing the recovery of the American continent's PSA-free status," sai a note released this week.
